Masquerade Sheep Dog Trial
Welcome to handlers of all herding breeds. We have been holding national style sheep dog trials here since 1996. We invite handlers at all levels of competition to join us.
We provide a free lunch for our handlers to enjoy on Saturday and Sunday. Join us for a potluck dinner Saturday evening.
Classes
Each class will run in both trials. Handlers may run in one or more classes. Class qualifications for both handlers and dogs are according to Texas Sheep Dog Association (TSDA) rules and guidelines. Please check with the TSDA secretary if you have questions. Class order is as follows:
- Open, Open Ranch, Ranch, Novice, Nursery
Directions
Rocksprings is located on Hwy 377 between Junction and Del Rio. The trial site is at the Carpenter home located behind the elementary school playground. Travel to Rocksprings on either Hwy 55 or Hwy 377. At the Hwy 55/377 intersection (Super S Foods on the SE corner) go east 1 block past Super S Foods. Turn left, go 1 block, turn right. The trial site is past the rock house on the left. For those using GPS, set your destination to the intersection of Pecan and Austin.
How to Enter
To enter, fill out and mail the entry form, along with fees. Entries postmarked by the deadline guanantee your spot in the trial. You may download or print an entry form from this site by simply clicking the entry form link. Please provide all your contact information as checks will be mailed and if we don't have your information your check may be delayed. As entries are received they are added to a list that is accessable by clicking the 'Entries' link above. This list is created after the first entry is received and updated as new entries arrive.
Deadline
The entry deadline is October 24th. Entries postmarked by October 24th are guaranteed a spot. Entries received after the deadline are put on a waiting list. As cancellations or scratches occur, the waiting list is used to fill the available spots. A cancellation/scratch is not class specific. An vacant spot can be filled in any class. A scratch must be filled before the start of the class. Where time and resources permit, late entries will be accepted.
Fees
Fees are $45 per run in all classes. No entries accepted without fees.
Refunds
All entries cancelled by October 24th receive a full refund. No refunds after the deadline unless spot can be filled. Wait listed entries receive a full refund for spots that do not run.

Prize Money
Payback is $23 per entry in each class. Prize money is determined by the TSDA Premium and Percentage of Money Paid Schedules (see section IX. Premium Money Schedule and X. Percentage of Money Paid Schedule).
Run Orders
Run orders will be drawn on October 28th and will be available to download or print from this site.
Sanctioning
This trial is sanctioned by the following associations:
- Texas Sheep Dog Association (TSDA)
- United States Border Collie Handlers Association (USBCHA)
- Texas Hill Country Stock Dog Association (THCSDA)
Sheep
Ranch ewes and/or lambs will be used. They are Rambouillet/Dorper whiteface crosses. The first run of the Open Class will have a fresh set. Sheep will be re-run after that.
Start Time
The trial will start at 8:00 am each day. The Open handler's meeting commences at 7:45 am. Classes will run continuously. Once all entries are in we are better be able to determine the number of classes we can run in one day. We expect to be able to run according to the class order listed above. In the case where a class cannot finish the same day, the trial committee will determine where the class breaks. This site will be updated should we have more to report.
Where to Stay
RV parking with no hook-ups is available at the trial site on both sides of the road. There are also several B&Bs, motels, and a hotel. If you are not camping, it is strongly recommended you make reservations early. Below is a list of some of the local accommodations:
